The Governing Board held its 3rd annual joint meeting with the Grossmont Union High School District board to review the past, present and future of the East County Education Alliance. Board members praised the work of the Alliance, the partnership between the two districts to inspire students to focus on college and careers, develop seamless pathways from high school to college, improve completion rates, and prepare students for the workforce.

Trustee Debbie Justeson said the growth of the Alliance has been “phenomenal” and that students are learning through the program’s efforts that they can continue their education after high school.

Trustee Edwin Hiel said he is pleased with the synergy and dynamic leadership of the Alliance.  He said he was delighted to see a new outreach flyer promoting both colleges that is being used to recruit students from area high schools.

Trustee Greg Barr offered a tribute to the departing student trustees and congratulated both on being accepted at Berkeley.

Trustee Elena Adams attended the May SDICCCA meeting, calling it a great learning opportunity to learn what’s being done at the 10 community colleges in the San Diego and Imperial County region.

Board President Bill Garrett said he was proud of the work of the Alliance and the major progress made in articulation of high school and college classes to better serve students. He praised Chancellor Miles for establishing the transformational Alliance program, which will have a tremendous impact throughout all of East County.
President Garrett, center, recognized outgoing Student Trustees Evan Esparza (right) with Cuyamaca College and Sebastian Caparelli (left) with Grossmont College for their service to the District and for so ably expressing the student voice. He commended President Julianna Barnes and the District and College team who swiftly responded to the flooding of the B and C buildings and minimized disruption of services to students.

Esparza reported on recent student diversity dialogues held on campus, and introduced new 2017-2018 Student Trustee Kyrie Macogay. He commended the Board for their spectacular professionalism and care of students; and expressed appreciation to the Chancellor, administrators, faculty, and staff for the tremendous amount of work, protection, and consideration given in support of students.

Caparelli praised trustees for their refinement, class, and professionalism, saying he is a better person for having served on the Board and learned to be a more gentle and kind leader.

Governing Board members and the Chancellor congratulated and thanked the student trustees, and congratulated them on their acceptance to UC Berkeley, where both will be attending in Fall 2017.

Chancellor Cindy Miles stated the work of the Alliance runs through all our student success work, including the Achieving the Dream (ATD) initiative. She commended the colleges for their progress noted by the ATD coaches during their recent visit, which includes building equity-minded practitioners, "annihilating the equity gap," and making engagement and success inescapable. She thanked the ATD tri-chairs, Academic Senate Presidents Paul Carmona and Tate Hurvitz, and Associate Vice Chancellor Research, Planning & Technology Christopher Tarman for their team leadership.

Chancellor Miles requested the following reports:

Grossmont College President Nabil Abu-Ghazaleh reported on achievements by student athletes, including six Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Titles for men’s and women’s volleyball, women’s indoor volleyball, women’s basketball, women’s tennis, women’s badminton and men’s baseball. Seven students achieved All-American status: Rebekah Leslie, Tran Pham, Nicole Ortiz, Yukari Naono (state champion in singles and doubles with Rebekah Leslie), all from women’s badminton; Adrian Tolbert, football; Rockne O'Brien, men's water polo; and Cabot Van Til, baseball.
